Sustainable Spring Cover ups
Nail between-season dressing with our edit of the best responsible outerwear brands
Morgane NyfelerSpring has finally sprung, and we’re looking forward to shedding our winter layers while fully embracing the warmer weather with a lighter, more playful mode of dress. But with spring showers still on the forecast, throwing a conscious cover up on top of any trans-seasonal outfit will effortlessly turn it into a stylish, weatherproof and sustainable look.
From Stella McCartney’s showerproof jackets made from ECONYL to Pangaia’s padded trench coats filled with down sourced from wildflowers, the dream Barbour x Chloé collab to timeless modular pieces from London-based brand Studio Nicholson – discover our picks of responsibly made jackets and trench coats to throw on, zip up and button down, year after year, come rain or shine.
Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney has always championed innovative materials to align with her vegan and circular values. For spring, the brand has designed a lightweight parka jacket from ECONYL regenerated nylon, sourced from ocean plastics, which can be returned at the end of its life to be recycled into new textiles. With its lime-green colour and gathered-detail sleeves, this showerproof jacket almost has us wishing for rain every day.
Studio Nicholson
London-based label Studio Nicholson was founded on the idea of a modular wardrobe pared back to the essentials, rejecting passing trends in favour of timeless style. Functional, playful and practical, the layering jackets and coats are made from technical, water-repellent fabrics that will keep you dry until it’s warm enough to show some skin.
Marfa Stance
Marfa Stance specialises in quilts, jackets and parkas designed to be enhanced with detachable hoods, collars and liners – or by adding pops of colours and texture – adapting to your ever-evolving personal style. Made in Italy from responsibly sourced materials that have been given a second life, these outerwear garments are life-long, statement cover-ups that can be transformed and passed down without losing an ounce of desirability.
Barbour x Chloé
This dreamy collaboration brings together the illustrious heritage and luxurious flair of both brands in statement outerwear pieces complimented with feminine detailing by Chloé’s creative director, Gabriela Hearst. Crafted from Barbour’s iconic waxed cotton, which is practical, weatherproof and easy to care for, the jacket and trench coat are versatile outerwear pieces for both the country and the city.
Remain Birger Christensen
The second label from Copenhagen-based Birger Christensen, Remain is the low-key destination for pieces that will stay in our wardrobes for the long run. Designed with quality materials and sharp silhouettes, the everyday coats and jackets are the finishing touch of a modern uniform that feels bold and timeless, while remaining relevant from one season to another.
Pangaia
As a materials science company, Pangaia always comes up with the most sustainable innovations wrapped in a minimal aesthetic and a vibrant colour palette. For example, rain jackets are made from a waterproof nylon that can biodegrade given the right environment, while padded trench coats are filled with FLWRDWN™ – an alternative to animal-based down created using wildflowers. As a signature, the brand stamps each piece with its sustainability credentials for everyone to see.
RAEBURN
Christopher Raeburn is a pioneer in responsible design and has built his eponymous label on repurposing surplus fabrics and garments to create new functional pieces. Crafted from 1950s silk maps originally given to the Royal Air Force in times of war, each anorak is made to order in the RAEBURN Lab in East London – a one-of-a-kind piece to cherish forever.
